A politician has come under fire and is facing a major backlash after accusing Meghan Markle of being a gold digger who married the wrong prince.
Following Meghan and Harry’s explosive CBS interview that took the entire world by surprise, private citizens and public figures have been left divided.
While many celebrities voiced their support for the royal couple and blasted the monarchy for allegedly mistreating Meghan while she was battling mental health issues and making racist comments towards her then-unborn child, some insisted that the Duke and Duchess are overacting and making false allegations.
Joining in on the criticism of the couple was also Australian politician Jarrod Bleijie, a Liberal National Party of Queensland MP, who suggested that Meghan was a gold digger in a shocking tweet.
“The problem started when American actress Meghan Markle was told William would be King not Harry. It was at this time that she realized that she married the wrong prince,” the defender of the monarchy wrote.
“So if she can’t be the future queen, she’ll attempt to take down the institution. The Crown will prevail!”
After the bold accusation, Bleijie has been facing backlash both online as well as in the parliament. Confronting his comments in the House was Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace who told fellow MPs that the politician’s comment was “disappointing.”
“It is disappointing that during a week where we are celebrating the success of women around the world, that we have a member in this House who is essentially saying that Meghan Markle is a gold digger,” Grace said.
“Meghan Markle is not who she married. She is a strong, successful woman in her own right. The young people of today deserve better.”
