A big group of beachgoers has been charged on the Jacksonville beaches in Florida after the state re-opened the shores for the public even after 1000+ new coronavirus cases were reported.
The beaches re-opened at 5:00 pm on last Friday for specific hours and under limited use restrictions. This news comes as Florida recorded a single-day peak in the positive COVID-19 cases.
Many photos and videos have surfaced the internet where people can be seen enthusiastically running towards the beaches after weeks of staying in lockdown.
On Friday, the Flordia Department of Health revealed that there were around 1,421 new cases on that day alone, which is the highest one-day cases recorded. As of now, Florida has a total of 24,753 cases with 726 fatalities.
According to the authorities, the beaches in Jacksonville will open from 6:00 am to 11:00 am and 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm for exercising purposes only.
Chairs, towels, sunbathing, loitering, etc. around the shores are completely banned. Additionally, beachgoers should also remain six-feet apart from one another.
By night many people left following the curfew and Lenny Curry, the Mayor said that if this turns out to be a mess, the city will pull the plug on it.
He further added that they are letting people on the beaches of Dual Country because the state officials feel motivated by the decreasing number of infections as well as hospitalization. The Mayor believes the reports signify that they could flatten the curve.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump laid out a three-phase plan that included re-opening states that are showing decreasing COVID-19 cases.
However, there have been no guidelines for the public to be in outdoor spaces like beaches and parks.
Earlier, Florida officials were highly criticized for not shutting down their beaches during spring break. Photos of mass crowd accumulation in Florida surfaced in March, where people were seen clearly breaking the social distancing norms.
The new measures by the authorities allow people to walk, run, fish and swim on the beaches, considering that they adhere to the social distancing measures.
