The number of individuals infected with coronavirus disease who show delayed or no symptoms could be one-third of the total positive cases for Covid-19.
As per the classified Chinese government data, the real scale of the hidden number of silent carriers can be higher than expected.
It said that by February end, more than forty-three thousand people were tested positive for Covid-19 in China who did not show any symptoms, were quarantined but were not counted in the official figures, which was 80,000 at that time.
This discovery has massive ramifications for strategies being adopted by countries to contain coronavirus.
Scientists are presently unable to come to a conclusion regarding what role symptomatic transmission of the disease plays in spreading it and how infectious individuals with no symptoms are.
An increasing number of scientists are challenging the WHO’s statement that asymptomatic transmissions were extremely rare.
An earlier WHO’s international mission report to China had estimated that infections without any symptoms accounted for 1%-3% of cases.
Hiroshi Nishiura-led group of Japanese experts noted in February that the number of Covid-19 cases in the world continued to grow, and the gap between the reports from China and the statistical estimates of incidents on the basis of cases diagnosed outside China indicated that a significant number of cases were underdiagnosed.
He also put to the percentage of asymptomatic Japanese tested positive for coronavirus evacuated from China’s Wuhan at 30.8%, which was similar to classified Chinese government data.
He added that the asymptomatic proportion could be higher in children than in the elderly, which would notably change the scope of the outbreak, as well as even optimal interventions, could change.
WHO and South Korea could all individuals who test positive for the disease as confirmed cases whether they experience the symptoms or not.
