President Biden was ambushed by an unexpected visitor as he left the White House together with his wife Jill.
On Wednesday, the POTUS and FLOTUS took to the skies to attend the G7 summit in Europe, meet Her Majesty the Queen, and have a talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As the first couple was about to depart from Joint Base Andrews to go on their first trip overseas as president and the first lady, however, a giant cicada lunged itself into Biden’s neck.
After the insect landed on the president’s neck, Biden swatted it before jokingly telling the reporters to watch out for cicadas.
“Watch out for cicadas. I just got one, it got me,” he said as he took a few questions before boarding the Air Force One.
As it happens, this wasn’t the worst thing cicadas had in plan for the day. Due to ‘technical issues’ – the insects overrunning their plane – the journalists who were traveling abroad to accompany Biden during his first foreign trip as president were delayed for several hours.
Before boarding the Air Force One and taking to the skies, Biden also told the reporters that he will unveil a global Covid-19 vaccine plan during the summit.
He also insisted that his mission was to show China and Russia that the West stands united. “Making clear to Putin and to China that Europe and the United States are tight,” he added.
The trip is expected to last eight days, whereas the Bidens will meet with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson before their summit with the other G7 leaders.
On Sunday, Joe and Jill are also expected to meet with the Queen before heading to Brussels for a NATO meeting. The president is set to hold the highly-anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 16.
