President Biden lashed out at the governors of the two states that lifted statewide Covid-19 restrictions and mask mandates.
As Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared, it is time to reopen the state “100 percent” and put an end to all restrictions in Texas. Shortly after his announcement, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves followed the example by proclaiming that statewide business restrictions and mask mandates are over.
Following the states’ decision to fully reopen, President Biden blasted the governors as he appeared to accuse them of “neanderthal thinking.”
“I think it’s a big mistake,” the 46th president said in the Oval Office.
“We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease in which we are able to get vaccines in people’s arms.
“We’ve been able to move that all the way up to the end of May to have enough for every American, to get every adult American a shot, and the last thing, the last thing we need is neanderthal thinking – that in the meantime everything is fine, take off your mask, forget it. It still matters. It’s going to take time.”
Biden went on to urge the people to follow the federal advice and continue to wear masks and social distance while maintaining good hygiene.
“Wash your hands, hot water, do it frequently, wear a mask and stay socially distanced,” he added before taking another swipe at the governors of Texas and Mississippi by saying: “I wish the heck some of our elected officials knew that.”
Biden’s tone appeared to be harsher than that of White House press secretary Jen Psaki who earlier commented on the states’ decision to reopen and urged people to continue following the advice of medical professionals.
“I would say we’re not asking people just to listen to the president, of course, we recommend that, but we’re asking people to listen to health experts, medical experts, the CDC, to Dr Fauci, to others who are basing their recommendations on how to save people’s lives,” she said.
