President Biden has signaled he might not agree to cancel $50k of student loan per borrow without conditions.
While answering questions of attendees at Tuesday night’s CNN town hall in Milwaukee, Biden told a young woman that “he will not make it happen” when she asked him about canceling $50k of student debt per borrower.
In spite of the president’s firm reply, White House press secretary Jen Psaki later claimed that Biden only meant he wouldn’t do it without imposing certain limitations as she reassured that the $50k write-offs are not entirely off the table.
While Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer already urged the president to sign an executive order on canceling up to $50,000 in student debt per borrower, Biden suggested he didn’t want to cancel loans of students who graduated from elite schools.
“I say to a community, I’m going to forgive the debt, the billions of dollars of debt for people who have gone to Harvard and Yale and Penn and the schools of my children,” the 46th president said.
“But is that going to be forgiven rather than use that money to provide for early education for young children who come from disadvantaged circumstances?”
Following the backlash over Biden’s comments, press secretary Psaki said: “He doesn’t favor $50,000 in student loan relief without limitation, and he used some examples of the types of schools or when it should be reimbursed or refunded.”
She added: “In the meantime, if Congress moves forward and sends him a package that provides $10,000 in student debt relief he would be eager to sign that.”
While Biden believes not all students should be entitled to debt relief, some Democrats clearly disagree with him. Calling the president’s selectiveness wrong, Representative AOC insisted that kids from working-class families also go to elite universities in search of better opportunities.
“Who cares what school someone went to? Entire generations of working-class kids were encouraged to go into more debt under the guise of elitism. This is wrong,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
She added: “Nowhere does it say we must trade-off early childhood education for student loan forgiveness. We can have both.”
