Pride Of Lions Sleep On The Road In The Absence Of Tourists Amid Coronavirus Lockdown In South Africa

A rare sight was seen in the Kruger National Park in South Africa where a pride of lions was spotted sleeping on the empty road as tourists are not visiting the park due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It seems like the lions took benefit of the empty road to take a nap on Wednesday afternoon. A few of the lions were lying in the sunlight while the others rested in the shade.

The lion pack was seen by Richard Sowry, a park ranger, near Orpen Rest Camp on the park’s western border, which now remains unvisited since the lockdown in South Africa on 26th March.

Mr. Sowry noted that the oldest lioness in that pride was almost 14 and that is very old for the big cat.

However, the park rangers do not wish that lions think roads have become safe because they are not being used due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Mr. Sowry said that the lions seemed to have been unaffected by surrounding panic. He added that normally these big cats remain in the bushes due to the traffic but because of the freedom without any visitors, they seemed to be enjoying the emptiness around.

The lions were lying on the hard tarmac that evening because the grass was wet due to rainfall the previous night. It seems like big cats and water do not mix, after all.

Just to remain on the dry surface, they chose the hard road instead of the soft grass. While humans are locked in, the wild is free and in the out, it seems.

South Africa recently extended the lockdown in the country after it recorded more than 2,500 cases of coronavirus along with 30+ deaths.
