Prince Harry now has a meaningful and different perspective on parenthood.
While delivering his speech at the annual awards ceremony, the Duke of Sussex, 35, shared the moment he and Meghan Markle received the news about their first baby together.
He was remembering the feelings of being first-time parents-to-be when the 35-year-old’s emotions got the best of him.
“Last year, when my wife and I attended, we knew we were expecting our first child — no one else did at the time, but we did — and I remember…” he expressed as tears welled up in his eyes.
The Duke the momentarily paused and put his head down to get himself and his emotions back as viewers gave him a round of applause.
“I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day,” he continued.
“And more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time.”
“And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heartstrings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own,” Harry said.
The WellChild Awards honors children who are gravely ill and also their caregivers. It is one of the couple’s most emotional events.
Though the Duke of Sussex has been a patron of WellChild for more than a decade, this year’s event was the first time he showed up as a parent to his son Archie.
