A prison is a place for criminals to repent and reflect on their criminal past so they could come out as a better person.
It is where they are punished for the horrible things they’ve committed.
But if you find yourself being sent to Wrexham’s HMP Berwyn, you could get a key to your own cell, a laptop, and also a phone!
Each two-man room (not cells) has a laptop, phone, toilet, and shower. The laptops are only used for arranging visits, completing work related to studies, shopping, and ordering meals for the week.
The $327.5million prison is attempting to adopt a more rehabilitative strategy which aims to ‘respect’ inmates.
There will be a policy that aims to respect inmates but prison officers will have the ability to enter their rooms for emergencies or searches.
HMP Berwyn, the largest jail in Wales and England, holds category C offenders, whose who are deemed unlikely to try to escape but cannot be fully trusted in an open jail.
The prison also has a snazzy gym with different types of equipment and there is also a communal area that allows prisoners to have conversations.
The new approach is described in a report by the Ministry of Justice and the Royal Institute of British Architects, called Wellbeing in Prison Design.
“Being given the possibility to personalise their own environments has a wide range of benefits for the health and well-being of people in custody, helping to create a sense of place and identity,” the report said.
“Allowing men in custody to control atmospheric conditions like opening windows or ventilators, controlling heating… can alleviate negative well-being impacts of poor atmospheric conditions and generate a sense of self-efficacy.”
A spokesperson for the Prison Service told the Daily Post: “We have committed to building up to 10,000 safe and decent prison places, replacing old jails which are expensive to maintain with those fit for the 21st century.
“While we welcome views on how the design of new prisons could reduce reoffending by improving prisoners’ mental health and rehabilitation, this document is not a blueprint for future prisons.
“Staff at HMP Berwyn can override the locks that prisoners use when they want privacy in their cells.”
