The producers have spoken out and confirmed that Gladiator will be getting a sequel set in time 25 years after the events in the first movie.
Gladiator aired back in 2000 and took over the world with the speed of light. The movie was nominated for 12 Oscars and won five of them.
Following one year after the movie’s success, Gladiator 2 has already been in creation. Nearly two decades later, the producers finally confirmed that the movie would be getting a sequel.
Much to the delight of the fans, Director Ridley Scott confirmed the sequel would take place 25 years after the events in Gladiator, suggesting that the plot will most likely revolve around Lucius, the nephew of Commodus who was killed by Maximus Decimus Meridius at the end of the movie.
To put extra fuel on the fire, Scott claimed that he knows “how to bring him back” when he spoke of Crowe Russell who played Maximus the Gladiator.
“I know how to bring him back,” Scott revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I was having this talk with the studio – But he’s dead. But there is a way of bringing him back. Whether it will happen, I don’t know.
“Gladiator was 2000, so Russell’s changed a little bit. He’s doing something right now but I’m trying to get him back down here.”
Previously, the Gladiator actor spoke very fondly of the movie, suggesting that he might take a role in the movie’s sequel.
“On the set of Gladiator I built up a relationship with him that would last forever. It felt like we were in the trenches together, gradually putting the movie together as we filmed it,” he told Hot Corn.
“Ridley did a job that was both epic and magical. And I can clearly remember when he told me that the production company was wrong to think of the film as an action movie to sell to teenagers.
“He was right: after just two weeks it was clear to everyone that the female audience was the biggest. Basically, the film is an emotional journey and Maximus Decimus Meridius gave me one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. I’m not saying he is my absolute favorite, but I really loved him.”
