Six Black Lives Matter protesters have been arrested and named after vandalizing and tearing down the statue of George Washington.
The incident occurred in Los Angeles, California, where demonstrators gathered at the Grand Park on Thursday to protest white supremacy and racial inequality.
In footage taken at the time of the incident, the statue of the first president of the United States was seen with red bands tied around its neck as angry protesters attempted to topple it over.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the “group, including the six people arrested, cheered and celebrated as others vandalized and spray painted the statue.”
After succeeding in the attempt to topple the statue of Washington, who was a slave owner and a plantation master, the group allegedly switched to a different set of clothes in order to stay undetected.
Nevertheless, the six BLM supporters were arrested shortly after leaving the protest whereas officers found several items, including goggles, arm protectors, laser pointer, and a gas mask in their backpacks.
“The suspects hid nearby to change the clothes they had been wearing and conceal items in their backpacks in an attempt to avoid detection and apprehension,” the police explained.
“As they left the protest, they were immediately detained and arrested by Los Angeles Police Department officers at Spring Street and Temple Street.”
The six BLM protesters arrested in association with vandalizing the George Washington statue in Grand Park include Christopher Woodard, 33, Barham Lashley, 30, Anna Asher, 28, Emma Juncosa, 23, Andrew Johnson, 22, and Elizabeth Brookey, 20.
As the LAPD revealed in a statement, the arrested suspects, who were booked on $20,000 bail, could be facing felony charges.
“This case will be presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office for felony filing consideration,” the police stated.
