A large crowd of New York City residents were caught on camera hurling glass bottles at police officers in a cruiser who were responding to a ‘shots fired’ call.
The incident occurred in Harlem, NYC, where the authorities had been responding to a ‘shots fired’ call as they were confronted by a huge crowd that began throwing bottles at the police cruiser.
As seen in the footage that has been circulating social media, several bottles landed right in front of the police vehicle before some hit it.
In front of the police car, people were seen shouting, cheering, and dancing to music, refusing to budge as the officers in the cruiser were honking and flashing lights.
After at least eight bottles landed on or close to the police vehicle, the officers were forced to back up and presumably leave the scene.
Following the confrontation, the NYPD shared the footage online and accused Mayor Bill de Blasio of “surrendering our city.”
“This is what a ‘light touch’ looks like: Police officers responding to a shots fired job in Harlem last night were met with this. @NYCMayor, @NYCSpeakerCojo and company should be held responsible for surrendering our city,” they wrote.
In the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice, NYC Mayor de Blasio ordered the police to use “light touch” when it comes to protesters and their demonstrations.
As the rift between the city’s officials and the police force grows due to increasing escalations, several hundred police officers in the city have allegedly confirmed having thoughts about leaving the police.
According to Bernard Kerik, a former NYC Police Commissioner, some six hundred officers had been thinking about leaving the force amid protests as per the Washington Examiner report.
Meanwhile, Sergeant Benevolent Association encouraged police officers to stay away from the “dangerous” city.
“To all our friends in law enforcement both outside & in the USA. DO NOT visit NYC & DO NOT encourage friends & family to visit. The city is dangerous thanks to our elected officials…” they wrote.
