Many countries prepare for winter months, but things in Qatar are completely the opposite.
The country is heating up so much that outdoor air conditioning systems have been installed so people won’t suffer from heatstroke.
Known as one of the hottest in countries in the world, the West Asian nation has experienced 46 degrees Celsius during the summer months.
Authorities are also ensuring they are ready for the football World Cup in 2022 by installing open-air conditioners in stadiums, outdoor markets, and on streets.
The next FIFA World Cup had to be delayed until winter months because of the extreme heat.
Authorities also want cities in Qatar to be habitable, so giant coolers have been installed in outdoor shopping areas and along pavements to ensure people won’t boil to death.
The Public Works Authority has also painted the Abdullah Bin Jassim Street blue in Doha to reduce the temperature of the asphalt.
Blue roads can help reduce the temperature as dark-colored roads absorb the heat from the sun more than lighter hues.
The experiment is on a 250m (650foot) stretch of a road and uses 1mm (0.003ins) thick blue coating with a special heat-reflecting pigment.
“The temperatures of dark asphalt is 20 degrees Celsius higher than the actual temperature because black attracts and radiates heat,” said engineer Saad Al-Dosari.
Other cities have also been conducting the same techniques to deal with scorching heat.
The air conditioning system in Qatar works by pumping cold air onto the street through cooling nozzles after cooled water is brought to the road through a pipeline.
Atmospheric chemist Jos Lelieveld said: “These areas are warming faster than the rest of the globe, and in certain cities on top of that you have an urban heat island effect and urban pollution.”
To help people stay cool, authorities have built streets and walkways pointing north to take advantage of breezes coming from that direction.
