After stepping down as senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle must drop their ‘Sussex Royal’ label.
The Queen and senior officials have agreed that it is no longer tenable for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to use the word ‘royal’ in their new brand.
The couple spent tens of thousands of pounds on their new Sussex Royal website and has sought to register the brand as a global trademark for a range of activities and items, including stationery, books, clothing and teaching materials.
Also, they have taken steps to launch a new charitable organization: Sussex Royal, The Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
But now, it has been made clear that the couple will need to change their brand.
It is understood that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have accepted that they won’t be able to use the Sussex Royal name.
Meghan and Harry started using the Sussex Royal after their announcement to step down as senior royals. Their Instagram page, @sussexroyal, has gained more than 11 million followers.
Their decision to step down and pursue ‘financial independence’ placed a spanner in the Sussex Royal works.
In addition to giving up their HRH titles and abandoning official patronages and appointments, the couple will also have to abandon the Sussex Royal brand.
A source said to the Mail: “In many ways this is inevitable given their decision to step down, but it must surely come as a blow to the couple as they have invested everything into the Sussex Royal brand The Queen would have had little choice, however.
“The Sussexes’ original plan – of being half-in, half-out working royals – was never going to work. Obviously, as the Queen has made clear, they are still much-loved members of her family.
“But if they aren’t carrying out official duties and are now seeking other commercial opportunities, they simply cannot be allowed to market themselves as royals.”
