75 years after her father King George VI addressed his people in 1945 after WWII ended in Europe, Queen Elizabeth addressed a nation that continues its fight against the novel coronavirus. Her address was broadcasted at 9pm London Time, and was recorded last week at Windsor Castle where she is self-isolating.

After mentioning how some may be frustrated that this day may not be celebrated freely, the 94-year-old Queen said that the streets of Britain are not empty but rather “filled with the love and the care that we have for each other”.

The Queen lauded her nation, saying that the brave warriors who gave their everything to protect this land would be proud of everyone who are doing what they can to protect themselves and those around them during these tough times. She herself had contributed to war efforts as a mechanic.

This was the second time that Queen Elizabeth addressed Britons on television after the outbreak of the global pandemic. Earlier last month, she said that Britain can overcome difficulties as long as everyone remains resolved. The April address came after casualties from the virus escalated in the country.

To her right, the Queen had a black and white picture of her father. She was 19 years old when Europeans celebrated their victory over the axis powers. Now 94 years old, she said she still clearly remembered the wartimes.

She said that at the beginning of WWII, victory was not a certainty by any means. The moral of VE day is the importance of not giving up, which was perhaps the main point she wanted to deliver this anniversary.

The Queen also mentioned how she vividly remembers the overwhelming joy of the crowd as her family and Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed the crowd. Footage from 75 years ago were shown along with the Queen’s address.
