The Queen has now become the world’s fifth longest reigning monarch and it adds a new milestone for her.
The 93-year-old Monarch surpassed 19th century Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph I on Monday with her stint on the throne, lasting 67 years and 356 days.
Franz Joseph I ruled the Austrian and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1848 to 1916, ruled for 67 years and 355 days.
Adrian Hilton, a lecturer in politics, philosophy and political theology first announced the news. He tweeted a screenshot of the Wikipedia lead table with the caption: ‘Just to say, today the Queen moved up a notch in the table of the world’s longest reigns, surpassing that of Franz Joseph I. God Save the Queen.’
Johann II of Liechtenstein is at third place as he ruled from 1858 and 1929, followed by Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.
Social media users quickly congratulated the Queen for a new milestone she achieved. One person wrote: ‘Would be well worthy of the top spot too! Our Queen Elizabeth II has reigned with dignity, duty and grace.’
Another said: ‘Go on Liz!’, while a third royal enthusiast added: ‘Long may she reign!’
Her majesty also officially became the longest-reigning British monarch in September 2015, surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Speaking in the Scottish Borders, the 89-year-old monarch said that time the title was “not one to which I have ever aspired.”
Recently, the Queen was captured attending church with Princess Anne at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk on January 26. The Monarch, 93, was wearing a bright orange jacket with a black fur hat and matching gloves.
Her Majesty was seen smiling as she sat in the back of the driven car alongside opera singer Dame Kiri Jeanette Claire Te Kanawa. The Queen’s appearance came after the shocking announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal exit.
