None of the senior members of the Royal Family will wear military uniform at Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday.
According to the Daily Mail, the last-minute decision was approved by the Queen to present a united family front.
Prince Harry, 36, had faced the embarrassing prospect of being the only senior male in the Royal family wearing civilian dress after he lost his honorary ranks.
The Duke of Sussex is understood to have wanted to wear the Blues and Royals dress uniform he wore at his Royal wedding in 2018.
However, he is only entitled to wear a suit, with medals he was awarded by the Queen or in the course of his duties.
On the other hand, the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Wessex, and Princess Royal would’ve been in full-military uniform.
According to reports, the issue intensified when Prince Andrew, 61, wanted to wear the uniform of admiral.
He was about to be promoted to Admiral in 2020 but decided to defer it until he resumes his duties.
Andrew remains a vice-admiral in the Royal Navy and he hasn’t been stripped of his honorary military titles. However, he is still benched amid controversy over his links with Jeffrey Epstein.
This resulted in concerns that if Andrew were denied his quests, he and Prince Harry would be the only ones in civilian clothes who had seen active military service.
“There was the risk of real embarrassment,” a source said.
To retain family unity, the Queen has decided that everyone will wear the same attire – black outfits for women and mourning coats and black ties for men.
