The owner, who wants to remain anonymous, purchased the book 20 years ago. The owner decided to raise money and contacted Jim Spencer, a rare-books expert at Hansons Auctioneers in Staffordshire, England.

Spencer started getting calls and emails from people who came to know they own a first edition Harry Potter book.

Jill Gallone, head of media at Hansons Auctioneers, told CNN that she was receiving “50 emails a day from people all over the world,”.

The book has two typos: the word “philosopher” on the back cover and “1 wand” which is repeated on page 53.

“You get the book in your hand and you can immediately see these basic typos,” Gallone said.

Speaking about the book’s value, Gallone said: “It’s just simply that people love the Harry Potter stories all over the world. Rowling wrote a story that the whole world loved. This is a book from the very start of her journey”, Gallone said.

“It’s only likely to go up in value,” Gallone added.

Hansons Auctioneers expected the book would be sold for between £20,000 and £30,000.

“There were three phone bidders that really battled it out to own the book,” Gallone said.

The owner of the book, a 54-year-old office worker, said: “I can’t believe it. It’s what I’d hoped for but I never really believed my book would make that price.”

“I knew another Harry Potter first edition had sold for £28,000 but I was panicking as there had been no bids prior to the sale. When I checked to see if it had sold, I was amazed.”
