Have you ever seen something that seemed so bizarre, so unusual, you started doubting your own eyes? That was the case for boat captain Erik Rue when he spotted something strange on Lake Calcasieu in Louisiana.
Erik was driving a charter boat when he spotted what seemed to be a pink dolphin popping up above the water. He couldn’t believe it at first!
Albinism, a loss of pigmentation causing light or white hair and skin, occurs in all types of animals. But this dolphin was such a rich color of pink that scientists quickly became intrigued.
“Pinkie,” as the locals started calling her, is living happily in Lake Calcasieu, where the water is just salty enough to suit a bottlenose dolphin. She’s become quite a spectacle! Many people are taking boat tours just to try and spot her. According to boat captain Rue, Pinkie isn’t shy. She often gets within feet of his boat to say hi to everyone who’s come to see her!
Pinkie was spotted mating with another dolphin recently – maybe her children will be pink too!
Rue is currently compiling a collection of photos of Pinkie so that everyone around the world can marvel at her stunning beauty!
