The US has recorded the second-highest sales of guns in the country’s history on Black Friday 2019, while the FBI revealed the exact number of background checks they ran.
As the Bureau announced, 202,465 checks were initiated on Black Friday alone. This number is the second-highest, whereas the record sales of firearms belongs to Black Friday 2017 when just 621 more background checks were run than this time.
The surge in purchasing firearms follows amid Democrats’ calls for stricter regulations on the sales and purchases of firearms.
While some critics have questioned the numbers by explaining that background checks don’t directly translate to the number of firearms sold due to one person being able to buy multiple weapons at once, the authorities have reassured that this is currently the most reliable way of tracking the sales in the country.
While the firearms industry in the US had been struggling since Donald Trump became the president, a great increase has been shown as the 2020 presidential elections are closing in.
According to the experts on the matter, the so-called Trump Slump was a result of people having zero worries about gun laws and control efforts. Now that Democratic candidates are pushing for restricted access to firearms, however, people’s fears of limited access are encouraging the sales once again.
“The Trump Slump is real, but the politics of guns has changed a little bit over the last year,” Adam Winkler, a University of California professor and an expert on gun regulations, said.
“As we´re coming up upon another presidential election, Donald Trump is vulnerable, and the Democratic presidential contenders are falling all over themselves to propose more aggressive gun reforms than their opponents.”
Since taking the presidential seat, Donald Trump hasn’t been shy to show his support for the National Rifle Association, earning him the title of one of the most firearms-friendly presidents in US history.
