According to research, 3 to 14% of recovered patients tested positive again for coronavirus after being discharged from hospitals.

This comes as medical experts feared that the country is facing another outbreak because of the rising number of important cases and ‘silent carriers’ who don’t show any symptoms.

Millions of people in Hubei can leave the city after the two-month draconian lockdown has been lifted.

Medics in a Wuhan hospital found that 5 in 147 patients tested positive for coronavirus again after being given the all-clear, said Wang Wei, director of Tongji Hospital.

14 percent of coronavirus patients who recovered tested positive with the positive later in Guangdong Province, China, said the deputy director of the provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Song Tie.

According to the study, patients who tested positive again showed no symptoms. However, doctors found no evidence that they became infectious as their family members tested negative for coronavirus.

Officials in Guangdong suggested people in close contact with patients who recovered were not infected by them.

“It’s possible that these recovered patients tested negative before because of false results,” Mr. Wang said. “The accuracy of a nucleic acid test is 30 to 50 per cent.”

The hospital director also said that it was important to monitor recovered patients and place them under quarantine for two weeks after being discharged from hospital.

“Our sample size for this study was relatively small,” Mr. Wang added. “We are planning to carry out large-scale research among local communities in Wuhan soon.”

The true number of ‘silent carriers’ or infected people who show delayed or no symptoms could be higher than initially thought, according to classified Chinese government.
