Actress and activist Leah Remini showed solidarity with fellow actress Thandie Newton after the latter disclosed she felt “scared” while she filmed “Mission: Impossible 2” with actor Tom Cruise.
Remini followed the church of Scientology for 30 years until she decided to leave the religion in 2013. Since then, she has been one of the most vocal detractors against the sect.
In 2017, the first season of “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath” won her the first Primetime Emmy award. The TV series looked interviewed people who have left the church about their time and experience; it was praised for its unrelenting and forceful tone towards the sect.
As one of the most well-known critic of Scientology, Remini said it must not have been easy for Newton to speak out against Cruise, who Remini described as a “poster child” of the church.
In an interview with the Daily Beast in which she promoted her new podcast “Scientology: Fair Game”, Remini said what Newton did is commendable for the great courage it requires.
According to Newton, Cruise was one of the worst partners she ever had to work together with. Not only did he carry around a sense of extreme arrogance when he worked with her, Cruise also thought it would be a good idea to gift Newton books of Scientology for Christmas.
Remini said she was not at all surprised to hear what Newton had to say. According to her, the whole kind and caring persona is a deliberate strategy from the church. Remini argues that the public persona of Cruise does not hold up when one looks for consistency.
Remini said it is not like Cruise’s eccentricities are secrets; she referred to the infamous episode of “Oprah” in which he jumped on a couch or the fact that he has reportedly not seen his daughter for years because of his religion.
The activist said she knew Scientology was not the right way because someone as weird as Cruise is upheld as a model to follow. In fact, some reports have alleged that Cruise is considered a deity of sorts within the church of Scientology.
