As some states in the United States signal they are returning to life before the global pandemic, more beaches are opening up in South Carolina and Florida. Some beaches are lifting restrictions they have imposed while others are reopening for the first times after lockdown measures began.
All this is happening as controversy rages throughout the world on when the lockdown measures should be lifted. Health experts are concerned that although the economy is important, these measures could be premature considering that there is still no vaccine or treatment for the novel coronavirus.
In South Carolina, North Myrtle Beach was reopened for the visitors. One South Carolinian commented that it was like Christmas came early this year, adding that he felt trapped that he couldn’t visit the beaches.
Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach in East Florida have followed suit, where the authorities lifted social distancing measures that were imposed. These measures had banned sunbathing or setting up chairs and towels at the beach.
From most reports, people have been adhering to limitations, such as South Carolina’s three-people-per-group policy. However, not everyone seemed aware or intent on follow these rules.
For example, Myrtle Beach Online reported on how teens were moving around in big groups. One group had 20 teens moving and talking together. One of them told a reporter that although he will try to be careful, he won’t stress over it like other people. He added “What’s gonna happen is gonna happen”.
Naturally, not everyone was supportive of these nonchalance. After seeing the big groups of teens, some people were visibly upset. One of them told a a reporter from Myrtle Beach Online that such attitude will ruin it for everybody. South Carolina governor Henry McMaster did say that the beaches could be shut down again.
The decision to reopen Myrtle Beach was an unanimous one by the city council. Prior to the city council’s decision, McMaster gave local councils the jurisdiction to decide whether they wanted to reopen public spaces.
Eager beach-goers showed up hours before the beach officially reopened at noon. All the nearby amenities such as shower facilities have reopened in tandem with the beach. Police continue to patrol around the area to enforce social distancing measures.
