The reporter who went through 8-year-old tweets from a 24-year-old man who raised more than a million dollars for sick kids had the tables turned on him.
24-year-old Carson King was highlighted by ESPN for a funny sign he brought to a football game. The sign joked: “Busch Light supply need replenished. Venmo Carson-King-25.”
King received thousands of dollars after ESPN’s coverage and he used the opportunity to help others and raised $1.14 million for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
But Des Moines Register felt it necessary to go through old social media posts from the Good Samaritan.
Reporter Aaron Calvin’s piece on King’s incredible charity work included two 8-year-old offensive tweets he posted when he was only 16 years old.
The Des Moines Register faced negative remarks for their coverage of the local man but the outlet defended the publishing of the old posts as part of their routine background checks. They argued that it was their responsibility to post the nearly decade-old tweets of the 24-year-old hero.
People were outraged by the hit on King and they held cancel culture standards against those engaging in it.
They went through Mr. Calvin’s old offensive tweets and pressed the Des Moines Register for answers: if old posts are relevant, shouldn’t the reporter’s far more recent offensive old posts be made a problem as well?
Jon Levine of the New York Post shared screenshots of Calvin’s old offensive tweets with the caption: “Does Des Moines Register have any comment on these?”
Erielle Davidson, a Federalist contributor, wrote to the outlet: “Please check out the racist tweets posted by your writer, [Aaron Calvin]. If you’re going to go after a 16 year old who raised a million dollars for the sick, why don’t you clean your own room first?”
She added: “The funny thing is, I HATE cancel culture. But these are the rules they made. So I’m regurgitating them.”
FoxNews contributor Stephen Miller asked executive editor Carol Hunter: “Hi Carol, What are you going to do about your writer’s own homophobic, racist, misogynistic tweets? Thanks.”
The next day, Miller noted that the outlet had declined to comment. “This was just a routine background check on your journalist, [Carol Hunter], why the sudden stonewalling?” he wrote.
