Republican officials, including lawmakers and senators, have joined the ‘Free Cuba’ protests outside the US Capitol.
A press conference was held to support freeing Cuba from its communist regime.
In attendance was Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas.
Talking to Fox News, Sen. Cruz stated that he was there to speak out against the Cuban government and in support of all those protesting for their freedom.
“The incredible heroes and patriots that are taking to the street, risking their lives to speak out against the communist dictatorship,” he said.
He went on to spotlight how the protestors are speaking out “against the oppression, poverty, misery, murder, the torture that has been carried out for decades from the tyrannical Cuban government.”
Cruz additionally told Fox News that he believes he will see Cuba free.
“The American people stand with the people of Cuba. The world hears you. You voice will prevail. Liberty will prevail. I believe Cuba will be free,” says the Senator.
Many protestors were demanding that the Biden administration take a more supporting stance towards the Cuban people.
One protestor told Fox News that Biden needs to have “strict measures, something that shakes the government. It has to be strong enough to send a message over there. The government cannot go and violate those young people’s rights, oppressing them.”
Another protestor stated that the Cuban people needed “some of that Biden-patented empathy” and that “they’re looking for it, you can give it.”
“Biden has said some words about supporting the people of Cuba and I agree with that, but we need some actions,” said Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.
He went on to say, “Biden needs to pressure other countries to do what we need to do, and boycott the regime. The regime takes the business, trade and the money and they use it to oppress the people.”
One protestor pleaded that “people are dying. Mothers are suffering… we need help.”
