It’s always exciting whenever our dog learns a new trick. After all, not all dogs are so easily teachable so when one does manage to pick up some commands quickly it’s a definite cause for celebration. Sometimes, those tricks can even be useful such as when you ask your dog to fetch your slippers or newspapers.
Then you go a little beyond that when those acquired skills become crucial and life-saving such as with K-9 police dogs and service dogs.
There are times, though, when a dog picks up a skill that goes beyond even those and is even a little more impressive even if it’s not as practical simply because we wouldn’t expect it of a dog. Like what, you might ask? Well, how about a dog that knows how to spell its own name?
Yes, you read that right. There’s a dog who knows how to spell her own name and it’s even more amazing that she was actually a rescue puppy and her name is Penny.
A PetCo employee found Penny alone in a local park wandering aimlessly so the kind-hearted worker took Penny in and set her up for adoption. Unfortunately, for some reason families kept returning Penny to the shelter.
All that changed when Leonora Anzaldua came along. She took a chance on Penny and it wasn’t long before the pup revealed that she had an extraordinary talent because she turned out to be extremely smart!
Penny is a fast study and even mastered the “sit” command after only a few tries. Even at eight months of age, Penny was already remarkable. So Leonora decided to up the ante a little bit and purchased a shape sorter which she quickly taught to Penny.
Leonora then introduced letters to challenge the pup more and amazingly, Penny can now spell her own name! Sure, she needs a little help and doesn’t yet know how to put the letters in their proper order but considering that this is a feat from a puppy is impressive enough.
Seeing this energetic and talented pup in action really makes us wonder why those earlier adoptive families returned this wonderful dog in the first place!
