Movies like The Lion King, Madagascar, and other similar films often portray a romanticized picture of what it’s like for animals in the wild.
But if you’ve watched the BBC or Animal Planet for any length of time, the wild is, in fact, a very dangerous place where death could come at any moment.
We already know this to be the case for untrained humans but just because wild animals have the instincts and the build to survive in the wild doesn’t mean that their existence is any less precarious.

This situation doesn’t just apply for animals out in the African savannah but even inside cities. As long as an animal is moving around without human supervision, their life expectancy is expected to be quite low. It’s probably ironic that wild animals running around in a city are in more danger than if they roamed around in a forest.
Speeding cars, electrocution, and even humans hurting animals for sport are just some of the many dangers that wild animals face in the streets.
One baby raccoon almost fell prey to one of these factors but luckily survived thanks to a team of veterinarians who worked to save her.
The baby raccoon was found by staff inside a local zoo and they surmised it was orphaned. This was because a dead mother raccoon was discovered on a road near the zoo. The baby raccoon had sought shelter in a camel enclosure before she was found.
The zoo’s staff decided to catch the raccoon and give her some help. And when they finally succeeded in catching her, they found facial injuries on her. They sent her to a veterinarian in Peterborough where they found fractured teeth, a large tear on her upper lip, and several other minor injuries around her mouth area.
The injuries could have been caused by a car striking the baby raccoon or by being attacked by an animal. It was also entirely possible that she was accidentally stepped on by a camel.
The raccoon was then given an anesthetic so that veterinarians could stitch up her gums and lip, remove a few teeth, and thoroughly flushed her wounds. Combined with the pain medication and antibiotics, this little cutie can expect to make a full recovery.
She was then transferred to a local rehabilitation center where she can safely recuperate before being released back into the wild.
But the way in which she woke up from anesthesia thoroughly melted the hearts of the people who worked on her. She was groggy and confused and tried to ascertain her surroundings and even pawed at her nose.
It’s a testament to human compassion that she made it this far!
