We often see ourselves as the pinnacle of life on the planet. After all, we’ve come out with so many scientific advances and have sent astronauts to the moon. What else can top that?

But the flip side is that humans can also be sometimes worse than monsters as many wars and the fact that our planet is on the verge of extinction-level climate change has shown.

Which is why when animals display a certain level of decency that some humans lack, it can be both touching and surprising. But perhaps that’s simply how nature is, to acknowledge that which uplifts oneself. It’s an innate thing that goes beyond intelligence.

That’s what a family on holiday found out as they were walking along a beach fronting the Red Sea in Soma Bay. As they were making their way along the waterline, they noticed an octopus that was stranded well beyond the water and on its death throes. With no way to get back to the ocean, it was dehydrating and inching towards death.

Without thinking, the family immediately went and saved its life by pushing the octopus back in the water. Exhausted by his ordeal, he needed some time to recover before finally swimming away.

But it didn’t end there. When the family went back to the same beach the next day, they saw a shadow coming closer to them. To their surprise, they found out it was the same octopus they had saved the previous day!

It followed them around for about an hour and kept wanting to touch their feet. Those actions convinced the family that the octopus came back simply to say thanks. They took a video of that special moment and it was among the most touching displays of gratitude ever.

The family named the octopus “Kurt” and decided that they would never eat octopus again.

If even an animal can display such gratitude, we should reflect on how grateful we should be as well for all the blessings we receive in life and say thanks to others who make our way of life possible.
