Tina could not hold her, soothe her, read to her, engage with her, or play with her. She felt miserable; she thought she couldn’t be a good mother.

She said, “when I couldn’t find my way to her, I had for a while become convinced that I was unworthy, I couldn’t be a parent, I had made a mistake of a lifetime, I didn’t have what it took to nurture a child.”

However, when she brought Julia to a pediatrician, she finally knew how Julia was different.

Tina learned that Julia was suffering from reactive attachment disorder (RAD). It is a serious condition for babies.

An infant or child with RAD does not establish healthy attachments with parents or caregivers. Reactive attachment disorder might develop when a child does not get enough comfort, love, and care.

As Julia was abandoned by her biological mother, she was afraid of being abandoned again from Tina. That was why she rejected her adoptive family.

Tina and her husband decided to know about RAD and try to understand Julia’s condition for the better connection with her.

As a result of their incessant effort, their daughter Julia could finally come out of her own world. The whole process of Julia’s recovery is recorded in Tina’s book Rescuing Julia Twice.

It is hard for an adopted child to instantly love his or her parents when they first meet. However, with parents’ constant effort, he or she will trust them and love them.
