There are people who are complaining or are worried about robots and AI making their jobs obsolete. While that hasn’t really been a problem in sports, could the Puncher Pro make that concern a reality?
The Puncher Pro is basically a punching bag that fights back, making it a good training tool for boxers as they can go all out without worrying about hurting their partner.
The contraption was invented by Kris Tressider, a structural designer based in Perth, Australia. While Kris isn’t a boxer, he does love exercising and has a background in gymnastics and martial arts. He wanted to add some intensity to his daily workouts and decided to include a punching bag as part of his routine.
However, Kris soon got bored at slugging an unresponsive and defenseless bag which is why he came up with the idea for Puncher Pro.
It’s not merely a punching bag with arms.
The robot can be programmed to keep throwing hooks and jabs, forcing boxers to also use their defenses such as ducking and dodging, something most fighters neglect when they work on the heavy bag.“I have had some interest from various boxing clubs and other individuals who are keen to test out the robot, and even try to buy one, but really I am still seeking funding or investment to help bring the product to the next level, and to the market.”
He added: “The robot was tested against a range of boxers from beginner to professional at a variety of different height and reach setting.
“It is set with harder routines for adults and also easier settings for people as young as 9.
“It runs off 12V DC motors and is controlled from a laptop.
“All the boxing instructors I have spoken to seem to think the robot has merit as a training device for practicing boxers.”
