‘Tutti Frutti’ hitmaker and the ‘architect’ of Rock ‘n’ Roll Little Richard, born as Richard Wayne Penniman, died at the age of 87 according to his son Danny Penniman.
As the legendary singer’s lawyer, Bill Sobel, explained, the icon passed away in Tullahoma, Tennessee, following a battle with bone cancer.
Throughout the decades, Little Richard created a number of hits, including Tutti Frutti, Good Golly, Miss Molly, and Long Tall Sally, and opened a pathway for the Rock ‘n’ Roll genre to flourish.
Throughout his career, Little Richard, who called himself the “architect of Rock ‘n’ Roll” during his speech at 1988 Grammy Awards, sold over 30 million records.
Following the music legend’s death, prominent music icons including the likes of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Rolling Stone’s Mick Jagger, and Sir Elton John took to social media to pay tribute to the singer.
“I’m so saddened to hear about the passing of Little Richard, he was the biggest inspiration of my early teens…” Mick Jagger expressed in a tribute.
As the Rolling Stone frontman added, he would always watch and learn from the singer who “was always so generous with advice to me.”
Meanwhile, Elton John dubbed Little Richard his “biggest influence” and claimed that seeing him perform live “was the most exciting event” in his life at the time.
Among hundreds of other musicians and singers who paid their respects to the Rock ‘n’ Roll legend was also guitarist Jimmy Page who insisted that Little Richard’s works “pioneered Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
