Roger Reece Kibbe, one of the most notorious serial killers and rapists in California, has died after being attacked in his prison cell.
The 81-year-old was found unresponsive on the floor at Mule Creek State Prison in the early hours of Sunday.
Jason Budrow, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, was found standing next to his severely injured body.
Kibbe, an avid skydiver whose brother was a police detective, was rushed to a medical facility where he was declared dead, according to Fox 40.
Authorities did not say whether a weapon was used or how the 81-year-old died but Amador County Undersheriff Gary Redman said that his death was “being investigated as a homicide.”
40-year-old Budrow was transferred to an administrative segregation unit. He hasn’t been charged in connection with Kibbe’s death.
It was in 1991 when Kibbe was convicted and sentenced to life behind bars for killing 17-year-old Darcie Frackenpoh.
According to reports, Frackenpoh was murdered after she disappeared from a West Sacramento street. Her body was discovered in the mountains near Lake Tahoe in 1987.
In 2008, Kibbe pleaded guilty to murder counts with special enhancements of kidnapping and rape stemming from the killings of Katherine Kelly Quinones, Barbara Ann Scott, Charmaine Sabrah, Stephanie Brown, Lora Heedrick, and Lou Ellen Burleigh.
In 2009, prosecutors said that Kibbe restrained his victims using parachute chords. He then cut the victim’s hair and kept pieces of clothing as souvenirs.
One person commented: “The Legal System is a JOKE for Death Row Inmates, they usually end up dying of natural causes, at least his death might have been painful.”
Another wrote: “Hmm… 81 yrs old? He lived a lot longer than those young girls he snuffed. He can sort it out with the boatman as he crosses the River Styx.”
