Two riders flung out to their deaths and five others suffered injuries after a speeding rollercoaster carriage flipped over mid-ride at an amusement park in Mexico.
Two men, 18 and 21, passed away from severe head injuries after the last car overturned at the La Feria amusement park.
A worker said to local news outlet El Universal that she saw two passengers being thrown from their car. Other riders hit their heads as the speeding coaster advanced at high speed while dragging the last car.
Initial investigations discovered a mechanical failure that caused the car to plunge from 33 feet, according to Ulises Lara Lopez, spokesperson for the attorney general’s office.
Authorities treat the incident as a case of negligent homicide.
An official from the civil protection organization, Miriam Urzua, said: “This is now in the hands of prosecutors, and prosecutors have already taken the necessary steps for an investigation.”
Videos circulating online showed the car flipping upside down and smashing into a metal loop. Photos of the incident show a single metal rail car on the ground and paramedics attending riders.
One internet user commented: “They’ve are not safe especially those travelling fairs there’s no official safety inspections to each and every ride.”
Another said: “Of course they are, there’s an inherent risk with doing ANYTHING, and there’s always a chance of mechanical failure or human error with anything like this To assume or even say something is totally safe is ignorant.”
A third wrote: “This is a tragic accident. Every one of them in hindsight is avoidable but mechanical failure is difficult to predict. Lessons have been learned and there is a high level of maintenance carried out to prevent these things happening, but as with helicopter accidents there is always the unexpected.”
