Charlie Watts, The Rolling Stones drummer, has passed away at the age of 80 according to his publicist.
The legendary musician, who was often dubbed as one of the greatest drummers of all time, joined the popular English rock band back in 1963 following a meeting with Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, and Keith Richards.
In the following years, the band grew stronger and gained fame internationally. More than five decades later, The Rolling Stones is known as the oldest performing rock band in history.
Though Jones left the band in 1969, Watts, Jagger, and Richards stayed for decades and made it onto every single album ever released by the band.
Besides his musical talent, Watts was also known for his wittiness and his love for his wife Shirley whom he tied the knot with in 1964.
Following the legendary drummer’s passing, his spokesperson confirmed the death in a heartbreaking statement that read:
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.
“Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation.
“We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.”
Paying a tribute to Watts were also hundreds of music icons from across the world.
“RIP Charlie Watts. One of the greatest rock drummers ever and a real gentleman. Condolences to his family and the band,” Bryan Adams wrote.
“A very sad day. Charlie Watts was the ultimate drummer. The most stylish of men and such brilliant company. My deepest condolences to Shirley, Seraphina and Charlotte. And of course, The Rolling Stones,” Elton John expressed.
“My mom always claimed I was conceived during the chorus of ‘Satisfaction’ by the Rolling Stones. Thank you Charlie Watts. I owe you my life. Rest in peace,” Curtis Stigers added.
Paying an emotional video tribute to the late drummer was also Paul McCartney of The Beatles who said: “So sad to hear about Charlie Watts, the Stones drummer, dying. He was a lovely guy. I knew he was ill but I didn’t know it was this. So, lots of love to his family, his wife and kids, and to his extended family.
“And condolences to the Stones, it will be a huge blow to them because Charlie was a rock and a fantastic drummer. Love you Charlie, always loved you, beautiful man.”
Our thoughts are with Charlie’s family, friends, and colleagues during these challenging times.
