A rooster equipped with a blade for an illegal cockfight has accidentally killed its owner while trying to escape.
Reports in India said that the rooster had the weapon strapped to its leg to fight its opponent when it attempted to flee, slashing the owner’s groin.
The owner died of blood loss before he arrived at the hospital in Telangana.
The rooster was reportedly held at the local police station before it was released to a poultry farm.
The man’s tragic death has prompted a search for the organizers of illegal cockfighting.
Local police officer B. Jeevan told AFP: “We are searching for the other 15 people involved in organising the illegal fight.”
Those people involved could face charges of illegal betting, manslaughter, and hosting a cockfight.
Even though cockfights are banned, it is still happening in rural areas of Odisha, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana states.
Owners equip their roosters with three-inch blades or knives as punters bet on which specially-breed rooster will win the horrifying fight.
According to Daily Mail, thousands of roosters die every year in gruesome fights.
