2020’s May 2nd in the real life seems less optimistic and in no mood to celebrate a fictional victory. J. K. Rowling agreed, saying that she felt it was “inappropriate to talk about fictional deaths” with a global pandemic raging on in her country of United Kingdom and elsewhere.

Therefore, Rowling said that she will instead donate £1 million ($1.25 million) to two charities. The author said that she will be donating to Crisis and Refuge. Crisis works with the homeless population while Refuge is an organization that aid the victims of domestic abuse.

Rowling, affectionately called Jo by her fans, said that she was both proud and anxious in these days. She said that she has three immediate family members who were continuing to work as they were essential workers.

Jo said that all the wizards who have fought for good in her fiction must have felt the same way as they prepared for the last showdown against the evil Voldemort.

The creator of the Harry Potter series shared this announcement on Twitter, where she actively communicates with her fans all around the globe. Rowling explained that she chose those two charity organizations because “the poorest and most vulnerable are hit hardest”.

Both organizations have expressed their gratitude for Rowling’s generous donation. On their Twitter account, Refuge thanked Rowling saying that their calls for help have increased by 50% after lockdown measures were implemented. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, domestic abuse has been on the rise in the UK.
