Singer Sam Smith announced on Friday to the world that he would prefer to be called only by gender-neutral pronouns.
The British singer-songwriter asked fans in a lengthy Instagram post to support him in embracing him for who he is but using pronouns like them and they in reference to him.
The post reads that he has decided that he is changing his pronouns to them/they after being at a lifetime was with his gender and that he has decided to embrace himself for who he is inside and out.
The post further mentions that he is privileged and excited to be surrounded by people who support him in his decision but he has been fairly nervous about announcing the same because he cares too much about what people would thing but f**k it.
The post further reads that he understands that there will be many errors and misgendering but urged the people to try and wishes that everyone sees him like he sees himself.
Sam went on saying that he does not understand yet what it means to exist as a non-binary person but he will be learning as the time passes.
He also added that the leaders and activists of the trans/non binary community have helped him and given him so much understanding and clarity.
Sam has reportedly been heralding this move in recent months. Back in March, Sam told Jameela Jamil that he began to suspect his identity after he heard the experiences of nonbinary and genderqueer people.
He further said that genderqueer, nonbinary means that one does not identify in gender, they are just them. They are a mixture of different things and that is how Sam takes it. He believes that he is not female or male but floats somewhere in between.
