31-year-old Samantha Klein has been jailed for 25 years after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October.
3-month-old Alaya passed away from injuries she suffered from the hands of Klein. The child was found to have a fractured skull, damage to the spinal cord, and have suffered a bleed on the brain.
Klein shook the child so hard her spine shattered. It is believed the babysitter has injured the baby only within hours of taking her on February 21.
The next day, February 22, Klein used her smartphone to search about a baby not being conscious and symptoms of seizures.
The 31-year-old reportedly talked to Alaya’s mother on the phone but didn’t mention anything about the child’s condition.
She then called 911 on February 23 and the child was taken to hospital but was ‘unresponsive.’ Alaya passed away due to severe injuries.
Klein insisted that she was innocent and denied having any role in the death of the child. She even told a TV station: “I did nothing to that baby.”
She also said that the bruise on Alaya’s face was already there when the child’s mom, Dominique Hilson, handed her daughter to her for a two-day stay.
“I kissed her on her forehead and she was just cold,” she said. “I started screaming and I had my friend call 911 and I started panicking. I didn’t know what to do.”
Klein even said that she had ‘loved’ Alaya but in October, she finally pleaded guilty to manslaughter and admitted to causing injuries to the child by shaking her hard and using blunt force trauma.
Alaya’s grandmother, Crystal Dusen, told Klein during the hearing: “You are an evil monster and we believe you are a dangerous person because you killed an innocent, helpless child who could not defend herself.”
