Some reviewers of Samsung’s new folding phones said the devices appear to be breaking after only a few days of use.
Even journalists who purchased the $2,000 phones to review the product before the public launch claim the Galaxy Fold screen turned black or started flickering before fizzling out.
A few reporters said they removed a thin, protective layer from the screen that they believed was supposed to come off. However, the protective layer was meant to be kept.
According to a photo shared by T-Mobile Senior Product Manager Desmond Smith, there is a warning on the Galaxy Fold packaging that instructs users not to peel off the protective layer.
“The main screen includes a special protective layer. Peeling off the protective layer or using any adhesives on the main screen, such as screen protectors or stickers, may cause damage,” it reads.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman claims his new Galaxy Fold started to operate abnormally after he got rid of the thin film. The screen eventually became unusable.
Gurman wrote on Twitter: “The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in.”
In addition, YouTuber Marques Brownlee said he peeled off the thin film and his new phone started to experience problems.
However, executive editor of technology news website The Verge Dieter Bohn said he left the protective film on but his screen still malfunctioned.
Bohn also said that the device has a defective hinge that causes the screen to become unresponsive or distorted. Slight swelling can also be felt when running a finger over it. His phone’s screen started to show signs that it would break entirely.
CNBC also reported that even when the thin film stayed, the device stopped working properly. The site explained: “When opened, the left side of the flexible display, which makes up a large 7.3-inch screen, flickers consistently.”
