School Teaches Boys Household Chores Like Ironing, Cooking And Sewing

Schools usually teach girls home economics while boys are sent to attend electrical, masonry, plumbing and carpentry classes.

But many institutions today, like The Montecastelo School of Spain, have realized that all skills are relevant.

Their slogan is: “Equality is learned with actions.”

So teachers in the school have added cooking, sewing, and ironing to the curriculum for males alongside electrical, carpentry and plumbing classes. The Montecastelo School of Spain has started teaching these skills in 2018.

School coordinator Gabriel Bravo said to Newsner: “It seemed very useful for our students to learn to perform these tasks so that, when they form a family, they are involved from the beginning and know that a house is a matter of two.

“It’s not a matter of the woman cleaning, doing the dishes, and ironing. This will allow them to become aware and learn to handle themselves at home.”

Some students initially thought it was a joke but it helped them realized how much work their parents have to finish every single day to make sure their household is running properly.

One student told Konbini.com: “At first, I thought it was a joke, that it couldn’t be,” while another said: “I personally feel that it allows me to realize how much work it is for parents and I see it’s not that easy.”

Economy professor Andres Luna said the classes are integral in teaching young children about gender equality. “They must understand that this is not a woman’s job, but also a man’s one. They need to know how to iron too,” he expressed.

One Facebook user commented: “It seems to me something fabulous, it should be done in more schools and also take it to effect in their homes with their mothers.”

Another wrote: “Well done, I hope that more schools will follow.”

A third said: “I love this, I wish my country Kenya could borrow a leaf. I would like to connect with you guys.”
