A Catholic middle school director has been fired as she is eight months pregnant and unmarried.
Michelle Gabriel, the director of Maryknoll Middle School in Honolulu, Hawaii, used IVF to get pregnant.
Last month, Gabriel was asked to step down from her position after she told the school she was pregnant.
This sparked outrage and people gathered outside Maryknoll Middle School in Honolulu, Hawaii to support Gabriel.
Gabriel worked at the school for 16 years before she was fired for being pregnant as she is unmarried.
Gabriel also attended the rally outside Maryknoll Middle School which attended by dozens of people to support Gabriel.
People said the Maryknoll community is all about love and family and what happened with Gabriel is heartbreaking.
One rally attendee, Jeremy Irvine, told News Now: “this is not the Maryknoll we grew up in.”
“We just want the truth and for the school to come out and be transparent in their decision.”
Another rally attendee, Merlinda Garma, said: “And then they’re like, “You need to leave.” You’re also hurting the baby. What did the baby do to you?’”
The school said in a statement they understand the reaction of the people but Miss Gabriel chose to leave by agreement.
The school said: “Miss Gabriel chose to leave by agreement and was represented by counsel in making that decision.”
“We remain grateful for her many years of service and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”
Gabriel graduated from Maryknoll in 1999 and then worked at Maryknoll Middle School for 16 years. She became the director of the middle school three years ago and has now been fired from the school.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in 2012 that federal discrimination laws do not apply to religious organizations in choosing their leaders and this is the reason her dismissal was legal.
