Spirit, the mother, and Sunny, the calf had no idea that five male whales were following them.

They were trying to separate the calf from the mother and if even one of the males had succeeded, it could have resulted in the calf’s death.
Whale Watch WA members, who recorded the incident, watched on in astonishment as 10-15 bottlenose dolphins suddenly came out of nowhere to help the calf and the mother.
The male whales chased the female humpback and her son for more than 30 minutes. However, they succeeded in tiring down the female humpback but she somehow managed to swim close to the Whale Watch WA boat in an effort to shelter her calf.
One of the dolphins even showed aggression by flashing its teeth as they came to her defense.
Surprisingly, one of the male humpbacks then started to act as the ‘bodyguard’ for the calf and the mother and chased down the smaller males away.
People who experienced this astonishing moment hailed the mother humpback for the lengths she went in order to protect her son.
The cooperation between the whales and dolphins were truly remarkable and a once in a lifetime experience.
