A school has gone viral after implementing a late pick-up charge for parents who show up late to get their children from school.
The Al Siraat College administration has come up with the idea to penalize parents who are late in an attempt to prevent children from being left unsupervised on school grounds.
According to the educational institution from Epping, Victoria, dozens of parents were often late, sometimes leaving their children to wait for hours before picking them up.
For their own safety, as the school argues, they came up with a $10 fine for every 15 minutes that a parent is late in picking up their kids.
“Child safety is our number one priority which is why we introduced the procedure that parents may receive a late pick-up charge if their child/children stay after hours,” Leah Hamel, the Head of Operations, revealed in an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
As she added, parents who can’t pick up their children in time may avail the school care program that offers to look after children after school hours.
“School care started at the beginning of term three (15 July), we introduced the late pick-up charge on July 17,” Hamel added.
While the head of operations admitted they haven’t received a lot of responses from parents after the implementation of the fines, Hamel did reveal that “the amount of children left late after school has significantly reduced.”
To avoid misunderstandings, the school also came up with special channels that parents can call if they know that they will be late for pick-up.
In addition, the school is keeping track of students’ presence with the help of a logbook to correctly fine the parents who break the rules.
“Working together is the only way forward and we welcome any suggestions that can help us to improve our procedures and processes,” Hamel said.
