A school has forced its students to wear cardboard boxes on their heads in order to prevent them from cheating by turning their eyes towards their classmates’ answers.
After the pictures from the classroom went viral, however, the people were less than pleased with the way the school handled the problem.
The incident occurred at Bhagat Pre-University College in Karnataka, India, whereas the school got accused of degrading students by resorting to unorthodox measures.
As the critics argued, the method not only limited students’ ability to breathe properly and focus on their assignments but also punished those who were perhaps entirely innocent.
After coming under fire, administrator MB Satish claimed the boxes were only applied on an “experimental basis” so that the school would see how they would work out. In addition, he claimed that students weren’t forced to wear them at all.
“There was no compulsion of any kind. You can see in the photograph that some students were not wearing it,” Satish said in an interview with BBC Hindi.
“Some who wore it removed it after 15 minutes, some after 20 minutes and we ourselves asked them to remove it after one hour.”
After the incident went viral, the state minister of education, S. Suresh Kumar, has also spoken out and called the measures taken “unacceptable.”
“Nobody has any right to treat anybody, more so students, like animals. This will be dealt with aptly,” they wrote.
In addition, several other officials and education figures have shared their disagreement with the “inhumane” practice.
Since then, the school has already taken the necessary actions as requested by the school board’s directive and abandoned the use of cardboard boxes to prevent cheating.
