An upset schoolgirl has spoken out about how she was banned from taking classes because she is too big to fit in her uniform skirt.
Denied education because of her size, 14-year-old Kada Jones from Hants, UK, is now forced to stay at home in isolation because she doesn’t meet the requirements of the school’s dressing code.
As the girl explained, she returned to school wearing a 24-26 skirt from Aldi rather than the one required by her school due to her size.
While there was no problem with wearing the bigger skirt last year, Kada found herself removed from classes this year due to failure to meet the dress code.
“I’ve been crying for the past five days – I don’t understand, I’ve done nothing wrong,” she admitted in an interview.
“People get put in isolation because they have done something wrong; they’ve been treating me like I’m not even a human being. All I want to do is go to school.”
As the girl’s mother, Carleen Jones, added, Kada is “healthy” and shouldn’t be denied education because of her size.
“Kada was in the headmaster’s maths class last year, and he never raised an issue with her skirt. If she was dressed like a punk rocker or something I would understand, but this skirt is similar to the school ones and is absolutely fine,” she argued.
Despite the family’s complaints, however, the Portchester Community School headteacher, Richard Carlyle, insists that all schoolchildren must respect and follow the same dress code.
“It’s about the skirt being the appropriate length and appropriate material,” he said.
“Miss Jones’ skirt wasn’t quite up to school regulations in terms of length, but the school is working to find a uniform that is compliant. Pupils have a duty to wear uniform respectfully and with dignity.”
