60 schools have closed their doors to students amid a massive norovirus outbreak that resulted in hundreds of children getting infected.

The outbreak occurred in the North East regions of England whereas hundreds of schoolchildren were left with upsetting symptoms of norovirus which include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, fever, and abdominal pain.

In order to stop the spreading of the virus and prevent more children from getting infected, dozens of schools have closed their doors while deep cleaning procedures are underway to counter the virus.

“Around 60 schools across the region are reporting absences due to symptoms of likely viral illness including influenza (flu) and norovirus,” Public Health England’s consultant Dr. Gayle Dolan said.

“We expect viral illnesses of this kind to circulate in schools and the community at this time of year and we have been providing advice to parents and schools to help reduce the spread of infection.

“Flu can be extremely unpleasant for young children but for most healthy people it is a self-limiting illness.

“Some people including older people, those with long-term medical conditions or weakened immune systems can be more at risk of developing complications and should seek prompt medical assessment if they develop symptoms of flu.”

The outbreak follows just a month after the government announced flu vaccination for children would have to be delayed due to a shortage.

“We are working with AstraZeneca and NHS England and Improvement to ensure that all eligible children get their flu vaccine as soon as possible,” Dr. Mary Ramsay said.

“Children who have underlying medical conditions that make them more vulnerable to flu will be prioritized by GPs first.”

While norovirus can’t always be avoided, some prevention methods include properly washing and cooking foods before eating, disinfecting hands frequently, avoiding crowded spaces, drinking plenty of water, and staying clean in general.
