Professor Michael Levitt of Stanford University claimed that coronavirus outbreaks in New York and Italy are now slowing down.

The Nobel Prize-winning scientist, who managed to accurately predict the number of cases and deaths in China, said New York and Italy are already ‘on the mend.’

Italy became the epicenter of coronavirus after China got the situation under control. However, the US also surpassed those of China and became the next epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Levitt told BBC Radio 4: “New York City, which everyone is so sad about, is actually turning.  New York City has passed its midpoint and this truck called COVID that was speeding towards the wall is no longer accelerating, it’s put the brakes on and this means that… New York is on the mend.

“In the UK there aren’t enough numbers and there are too many separate outbreaks.

“Italy, on the other hand, has turned the corner; Switzerland has turned the corner. You’ll be reading soon enough [about] Italy being on the mend, Switzerland on the mend.

“We hope, but we’re not sure yet, that Spain has also joined this select club of people who have passed the midpoint.”

Both New York and Italy have been crippled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the north of Italy, hospitals have been overloaded with coronavirus patients and treatment has had to be rationed. In a New York video, corpses were seen being loaded into a truck while a temporary morgue is being set up in Central Park.

Professor Levitt made headlines for his predictions. “What we need is to control the panic,” he said, “we’re going to be fine.”

In an interview with China Daily News in late February, the professor said he that he believed the rate of growth had already reached its peak. He also predicted that China would see 80,000 cases and 3,250 deaths.
