There are those who allege that the frontier is not in outer space but in the depths of our oceans. And the Great Blue Hole certainly lends weight to that argument and is probably why it’s rated as one of the top five scuba diving spots on the planet.
Located more than 40 m (120 feet) below the waves, it has a marine sinkhole that stretches 318 m (1,043 feet) across. It has attracted tourists from all over the world who are eager to scour its mysterious depths. It’s a small wonder that Discovery Channel puts this location on the number one spot in its top ten amazing places on Earth.
The site became famous in 1971 when Jacques Cousteau brought his ship the Calypso to the area that same year to chart it and explore its underwater caverns.point 235 |
How the circular hole was formed is already a fascinating story in itself.point 62 | The limestone caverns used to be above sea level but got flooded during various stages of ocean rise throughout the course of Earth’s history.point 187 | 1
The Great Blue Hole once had a depth of 125 m (410) feet but because of the sediment that has slowly been filling it up, the floor has risen by about 1 meter (3 feet).
The beauty within the Great Blue Hole is breathtaking with interesting underwater structures formed from the limestone stalactites hanging above at 40 meters. The uniform slant of the stalactites suggests a shifting of the plates underneath.
It’s not just scuba divers who explore the Great Blue Hole. Two submarines mapped its interior in December 2018.
At the edge of the hole, various marine life congregates where there are light and coral. Sharks, parrotfish, and turtles are just some of the creatures that one can find there. Divers often encounter these amazing animals in the water and even when they reach the shallows near the surface.
Among scuba divers, one question that always comes up is whether or not one has been to the Great Blue Hole. That’s how high it is on the list of must-see places for scuba divers and will likely retain that spot for generations to come.
