A woman pleaded guilty to biting off a man’s tongue during a street fight before a seagull flew off with it.
James McKenzie watched in horror as the seagull flew away with part of his tongue after 27-year-old Bethany Ryan attacked him.
Ryan from Lochend, Edinburgh reportedly pleaded guilty to assaulting the victim on Leith Walk in Scotland.
The appalling incident took place on August 1, 2019, when Ryan and McKenzie suddenly got into a fight.
Prosecutor Susan Dickson told Edinburg Crown Court that the victim had approached Ryan with a ‘clenched fist’ and the woman responded by pushing him and kissing him.
“She kissed him on the lips and bit through his tongue, which caused a piece to be removed,” Dickson explained.
“Mr McKenzie walked off and spat it out, at which point the piece of muscle was picked up by a large seagull that made off with it.”
McKenzie was taken to the hospital with a bleeding mouth but he did not undergo surgery as the part of his tongue, which was around 2 x 3 cm in size, was no longer available.
“He did not require surgery given the piece of tongue was no longer available and could not be reattached,” the court heard.
Dickson also said that the incident left the victim permanently disfigured.
Ryan pleaded guilty to assault by pushing and biting off a part of McKenzie’s tongue and also to permanent disfigurement.
One person commented: “Give her 10 years if a man did that to a woman they’d serve a proper sentence.”
Another wrote: “He must have pushed his tongue into her mouth. Sounds like they deserved each other.”
A third said: “Don’t blame the bird it was the horrible woman who did it and hopefully she is locked up for many years as she can’t function in public.”
