”
As the Feel Me hitmaker revealed in a live-streamed episode of Miley Cyrus’ Bright Minded, she feels grateful to finally understand what’s been causing all the depression and anxiety throughout the years.
According to the 27-year-old, she found out she was bipolar following her visit to McLean Hospital in Massachusetts.
“Recently, I went to one of the best mental hospitals in America, McClean Hospital, and I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized that I was bipolar,” the singer admitted.
As Gomez went on to say, the diagnosis made her feel not only “terrified” but also relieved because she now finally knows what she’s dealing with.
“When I have more information, it actually helps me, it doesn’t scare me once I know it,” the 27-year-old added.
“When I was younger, I was scared of thunderstorms and my mom bought me all these books on thunderstorms and she was like, ‘the more you educate yourself on this, the more that you’re not going to be afraid.’ It completely worked. That’s something that helps me big time.”
The Lose You To Love Me singer has also opened up about her upbringing and claimed speaking about emotions wasn’t a popular thing to do in Texas where she was raised.
“I’m from Texas, it’s just not known to talk about mental health. You got to seem cool. And then I see anger built up in children and teenagers or whatever young adults because they are wanting that so badly,” she added.
“I just feel like when I finally said what I was going to say, I wanted to know everything about it. And it took the fear away.”
Linking the importance of talking about mental health to the current situation revolving around the coronavirus pandemic, Gomez and Cyrus pointed out that people may feel especially isolated amid lockdown due to issues with reaching out to other people.
